Book Description: Every adoption experience is uniquely different but the yearning to have unconditional family love is universal. Two Indian sisters, Priya and Ari, experience what it's like to be adopted into a multi-cultural, interracial family. Walk alongside these two charming, dynamic girls as they journey through the adoption transition to a new country full of new experiences! "Finding Family in a Far-Away Land" is a pensive and sometimes comical book that demonstrates how children can experience the same journey quite differently. A glossary of cultural terms is included so that all can learn and enjoy what Ari and Priya cherish about their Indian roots. This story is meant to be a resource to those hoping to learn about one family's adoption experience― and may even help a child process their own adoption story. The intended audience for this book is children ages 4-10.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Finding Family in a Far-Away Land: An Adoption Story by Amanda Wall is such a precious book written about the author's experience adopting two daughters from India. The story is told with Priya, the oldest day and her point of view. Priya was old enough to remember their life in with their parents and then in the orphanage after they lost their parents, so we get a little of India's culture mixed in as well. I enjoyed this story very much. I know of families that adopted children from other countries and always wanted to do that, but God didn't have that for me. But I have always admired people willing to give children a home that otherwise may not have one. It was fun and interesting as the two cultures mixed and the issues with each side as they learned their new way of life. Author Amanda Wall does a very nice job writing and illustrating the story. The illustrations are a little bit different than a lot of children's books, but yet they work well with telling the story. I love the front cover, I think it fits the story perfectly. This is a very well thought out and written book, and tells a story that needs to be in many families. I think it would be a good library book for schools as well. It would be an awesome resource when needing something to read to children who have been adopted, and because it is a true story I think I would be more meaningful. I highly recommend this sweet book and it is Four Stars for me. A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. Now join me for an interesting interview with author Amanda Wall

  1. How do you get into a good mode for writing?
Noise cancelling headphones are not just for the airplane! I have a busy household, so I make the most of real or induced quiet moments.  I hunker down in a room with natural light and get a relaxing music playlist going. Music, coffee, and salty peanuts are as essential to me as my computer.
  1. What are your favorite topics to write about?
Personal memories and experiences are my favorite topics because there is much emotion behind the words. I especially enjoy writing about my kids because their imaginations are active. They transport me back to being a kid again especially with their varying personalities. This past week I retasted Lucky Charms for the first time in 25 years. Still amazing! I hope to induce a relatability in my writing or provoke a thought. If a reader feels like they are there with me then I have done a proper job.
  1. There are many books out there about adoption. What makes yours different?
My children’s story about adoption is different because it is a true story and is told from the perspective of my daughter Priya. She was almost 5 once adopted and remembers moments in her life in India quite vividly. I chose to write about their experience in India, the moment we met, and the transition home because adoption doesn’t just begin once you get home.  Many children who have been internationally adopted can relate to Priya’s feelings and experience.
  1. You mentioned you enjoy traveling with your family. How has travel influenced your writing?
Travel has a way of heightening senses. You become more aware of your surroundings and those involved.  It also helps you see the world outside of yourself and your norms which is healthy. There is always something to learn from someone or a new culture. I think because I absorb travel experiences in a more present state of mind, I remember details in a deeper sense. Those memories translate well when writing because I can be more descriptive when describing the smells at a market or the emotion involved when wiggling toes in the sand or sharing a staring contest with a white-faced monkey.
  1. If there is one thing you want readers to remember about you, what would it be?
I am a reflective yet evolving human just like everyone else. Being a parent in a transracial adoption is a journey of learning, from my children and many credible resources, of how to be a more aware, educated parent every day!
