MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

To Every Page a Turning: One Life's Journey by Carl Buccellato is a sweet historical fiction that follows the life of a young boy as he journey's through life. The main character parallels the authors own life and the goods and the bads of that life as his journey unfolds. I love the opening of the book with the old man and woman sitting on their porch drinking coffee. This sets the mood for the story for me. The journey of this man was interesting, entertaining, fun at times, but there are many times it was the harsh reality of living life and the difficulties he faced along the way. This is a somewhat different historical fiction that will grab your heart and keep it for a while.

Carl Buccellato does such a good job writing this book. For those of us born in the 1950's it was interesting to think back through those times and years. The main character as well as the supporting characters were well crafted and thought out and their development throughout the story was spot on. I appreciate the references in his faith in the Lord and it was really nice as well as encouraging the way he didn't back down from what he bbelieves. There is a lot more in this short book that will have you laughing and sometimes in tears, and I highly encourage you to check this book out. This one is a firm Five Stars for me.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

NOW JOIN ME IN RREADING THIS SPECIAL INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR CARL BUCCELLATO

Q.  What made you write this book and where did you get the inspiration for the characters in this book?

A. I have been journaling and keeping notes for over 50 years to address issues that I had during my youth, having grown up in a home with an alcoholic parent. These journals helped me come to answers for repressed feelings and emotions that I had for a long time. Recently after re-reading these journals, I concluded that there were many items in there that could assist other people in their journeys through life and quest for wholeness. So, I was determined to write this novel. All the characters in this book are real and all the events that took place did happen.

Q: Why didn’t you identify the name of the key character?

A: I believe that the book represents a generation rather than an individual. While it closely resembles my life traveling through the latter half of the 20th century from World War II through 1996, it also mirrors, I believe, the lives and issues of most people of my generation. There are 17 million surviving war babies in America, and 75 million baby boomers. All these people live with the changes and the paradigm shift of the 20th century, with all its dilemmas and radical change — and there were many. They all lived through similar experiences — maybe not the same, but similar experiences to those that I did and have reflected here in this book. The changes of coming of age, education, the changes imposed upon us by political change, economic change, and certainly the war years, were very difficult to endure. Raising a family, starting a business, dealing with drug addictions, alcoholism, divorce — all these things came into play. Perhaps the lessons I learned and the travels I took depicted in this book will help others in their journey through life. I certainly hope so.

Q: Where did this book take place, and were you there?

A: The book opens in New York City in the 1940s and 50s, continues through Vietnam in the1960s, back to New York, and then globally. All these events took place where they were depicted, and I was present for all of them. The memories and emotions depicted in the book come directly out of the journals and notes which were written and saved for almost 50 years, so they reflect the honest emotions of the moment.

Q:  In your opinion what is the book about?

A: This book is not a story of war, nor is it a love story. This book is a representation of a person's life through all the dilemmas, high times and the low times, and what life is about. In many cases, this book reflects change, growth, awareness of God's presence in my life, and the surety that with God's direction, life gets better, and I would hope many people will find the same surety when reading this book, to assist them in their growth and then change in addressing their needs.

Q:  Where and how do you write?

A:  As I have said before, this book is a compilation of old journals and notes that were taken over a long time. Many of them written on yellow pads, mostly by hand, later on a laptop, and then compiled into a novel on a computer. Today I write in my office, and I try to write early in the morning. It is a good time for my memories to come back very smoothly and easily.
