Not since the great Eduardo Cabrera dominated the bull riding scene, have we seen a Brazilian rider storm up the rankings the way Luciano Navarro has.  Along with his compatriot, Joao Rojas, lately it seems every event has set the green flag flying.  I was lucky enough to get a chance to sit down with Luciano after his win at Houston and interview him.

Since you started making a splash at rodeos, everyone has compared you to Eduardo Cabrera.  Do you think the comparison is justified?
Obviously I appreciate being compared to a champion like that.  Senhor Eduardo has been a great mentor to myself and Joao, helping us find our feet in a strange country.  I hope that I can make him proud.

You mention Joao Rojas, has it helped having a fellow countryman to travel with?
Yes, it has helped.  Joao feels like a brother now, we spend a lot of time together on the road. (Our interview is interrupted as several young ladies ask to have their picture taken.)

Does that happen often? You are obviously popular with fans, especially the ladies.
(He shrugs, as if the attention is normal) I enjoy talking to the fans, the girls are all very nice to me.  I have nothing to complain about.  It is not such a bad life for a single guy.

If you can escape injury and maintain your momentum, you have a good chance at the NFR in Las Vegas this year.  Does that add to the pressure?
No, each time I get on a bull, it is me and the bull.  I do not think outside of the 8 seconds.  I do try harder to keep my body fit between rides.  But man, I have always tried to think like I was a champion.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Doing what I am doing now, but with a new truck and wearing a gold championship buckle.  Maybe spending some more time at my ranch, (he gives his famous smile,) maybe I have a wife and children.  Or maybe, they make movie about my life. (he laughs).

Maybe, I know I would watch it.  Thank you for taking the time (more fans are waiting to get his attention,) I'll leave you to your fans.

Thank you.
