MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Great Weight Debate: Get the Facts and Choose the Diet That's Right for You by Amy Newman Shapiro. What an interesting book, especially for people who have tried diet after diet and have failed. This is not a fad diet book. But in this book, author Amy Newman Shapiro does list all of the many diets and summarizes each one in a way that readers can understand and know. A lot of the diets I have never heard of, but there are many I have heard of, and I have tried a few of them. But what readers will learn is that just as everyone is different, every diet is different. And hopefully after reading this book you will have a better idea of which diet is the best for you to choose. In addition to diets, Amy talks about different foods and why they are or may not be the best choices for you.

All in all, this is one of the best books on dieting I have ever read, and I have read a lot. I learned many interesting things about some of the diets that have been floating around for years. This book is a great resource and I will definitely be keeping my copy for those times I need answers.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Now join me in this wonderful interview with the author

  • If losing weight when you are overweight or obese is healthy, what makes a diet unhealthy?

Most diets are a set of rules telling you what to eat and what not to eat. Any food group that is restricted or eliminated can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Over time some nutrient deficiencies can lead to fatigue, osteoporosis, and intestinal issues. Other diets encourage high fat intake and that can lead to heart and liver disease.

Extreme diets, those that cause drastic weight loss over a relatively short amount of time, rarely lead to permanent weight loss. Remember the TV show The Biggest Loser? They all struggled and lost the battle to keep the weight off. Part of that is because the changes in metabolism (the rate at which we burn calories) drastically reduce calorie needs meaning you have to eat much less to maintain the weight loss. In other words, after dieting, we don’t burn as many calories as we did before dieting. Any calories we consume but don’t burn, turn to fat. And on top of that, as we regain the weight, out metabolism does not increase, it stays at its after- diet low, the slower metabolism causing the pounds to pile on that much easier and taking them off again that much more difficult, maybe impossible.

The weight loss goal should include realistic expectations of target weight loss and a strategy in place for keeping the weight off.

  • If I haven’t been exercising, how can I burn extra calories?

Walking is the most basic, least expensive, do anywhere, form of exercise there is.  Walking can be done on a school track, indoors on a treadmill, down Main Street, a country road, or around the soccer field while your kid is at practice.  You can walk with your friends, your kids, your coworkers and your dog. Or walk solo, enjoying some alone time, good music or a podcast. You are more likely to stick with it if it fits into your lifestyle, schedule it and enjoy it.  It does not matter what time of day or where you walk.  Walking burns calories, tones muscles, increases cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and helps keep blood sugar under control.

  • What is the biggest obstacle to losing weight?

Portion control. It is not necessarily what you eat but how much that makes a difference. The amount of food we put on our plate is a habit, a behavior we do without thought. But stop and consider how hungry you are in that moment, and you may find you can be satisfied with less. Another challenge to portion control is the amount we are served in to-go orders and prepared food containers. We are all on a see-food diet. When we see food, we want to eat food, hungry or not. The best strategy for changing this behavior is to stop and consider your hunger level before each eating event, put less food than usual in front of you, and after you have eaten, reassess how satisfied you feel.

  • Where is your favorite travel destination?

I have had the great fortune to have had the opportunity to travel around the globe with friends and family. We travel in celebration of big events in place of throwing parties. Those celebrations have brought me to Greece, Belize, Tahiti, Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and Central America. But the most memorable is a nine-day sail through the British Virgin Islands aboard a yacht with a captain and cook, my husband and friends. Every day was the perfect mix of swimming and snorkeling, exploring the nearest island, curling up with a good book and dancing on deck under the stars.

  • Do you have another profession besides writing?

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I provide nutrition counseling and lifestyle management in a private practice as well as being a corporate wellness consultant. And I recently completed yoga teacher training and hope to be leading more yoga classes in the near future.

  • Where do you write?

I keep my laptop on a desk wide enough to spread out research materials and notes facing my garden with a bird feeder within view that attracts colorful birds to keep me company.

Thank you Amy Newman Shapiro for answering these questions for us, and help us better understand what your book is teaching us. I know I am going to use this with the diet I am already on.
