untitleddesign_1_original-18 War at the Ice Cream Store Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli (Frank Tl Frogg and Friends) by Cheryl DaVeiga and Dave Gibson is a fun, funny story that takes place in an ice cream story with a whole lot of flavors of ice cream. The story is kinda silly as each of the ice cream flavors communicate with each other. Each flavor got along well except Bulli Vanilli because he thinks he's the best of them and he is so rude and picks on Mustachio Pistachio really a lot. The ice cream flavors soon gets tired of hearing Bulli Vanilli always being negative and bullying everyone else, especially their friend Mustachio Pistachio so they decide to teach him a lesson and give Bulli Vanilli a taste of his own actions. This is a very cute story and very clever way of teaching children valuable lessons. I love the story and all of the cute ice cream flavors. We need books to teach children the consequences of bullying and that it is do wrong and hurtful to others. My only problem with this story is, I'm not so sure it is right teaching kids to bully someone who is bullying others. It's like trying to teach a wrong with a wrong. I would read the book to children but stress it is not the right thing to do to Bully anyone for any reason. There is also an interactive multimedia version, which includeds videos that I think would be wonderful. I didn't get to read it but strongly encourage you to read this copy of the book. This book would be great anywhere kids will be, whether it be a classroom, daycare or the many places our kids are. There are three illustrators with this book. Sarah Krogman, Dave Gibson and Jay Petsko really do a fabulous job with the illustrations. The book cover is awesome and the characters as well as every picture is so vividly beautiful that children everywhere will be wanting to read this book when they see it. The inside, each page tells the story so wonderfully. This really is a beautiful book. A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. And now Join me with an interesting interview with Cheryl DaVeiga and Dave Gibson

So, what happens when two puppet-pun- ice cream, and music- loving songwriters get together to write a children’s book?  Dave says:  Well, naturally you get an action packed, pun-filled, super silly book about a “war” at an ice cream store that takes place at the Frozen Frogg Ice Cream Store.  And, of course, you get a sing-along song.   Cheryl says:  I’d say you get a major scoop of fun for the whole family, when Mustachio Pistachio gets his bucket kicked by the self-proclaimed King of the Flavors, Bully Vanilli. That causes a little ruckus!  As our song goes ”Biff Bam Booza, Yowza Wowza Wooza!”

Many people have only seen the print version of the book, so tell us more about this interactive version! Cheryl says:  We’re very proud of the print version -- it easily stands alone and has received great reviews -- but the Digital Flipbook takes everything to the next level and brings the book ENTIRELY to life.  Narrated by Frank TL Frogg and his zany puppet friends, it’s got music, video and a sing-along song that we wrote and Dave sings.  Dave says:  We’ve made the book a completely interactive experience. Kids get completely immersed, and it’s great because they don’t even realize they are improving their reading and music abilities.  It just feels fun and interactive, and helps them expend any leftover energy they have before naptime or bedtime. You can buy an unlimited access pass to this awesome digital flipbook at franktlfroggandfriends.com. PLUS, kids can meet all of the puppets in a totally free, 37-page digital flipbook called “Meet Frank TL Frogg and Friends.”  Get ready to fall in love with the puppet-sized town of Lucky Fork!

Where did the idea for the characters Mustachio Pistachio and Bully Vanilli come from? Dave says:  Well, Cheryl and I were laughing one night about my Frog Song and her Ice Cream Storm song (songs we’d both separately written).   I loved the idea of writing about personified ice cream, because who doesn’t love ice cream?  The name “Bully Vanilli” came up by just playing with the word vanilla. Then we laughed about how Bully would be the most popular flavor.  Cheryl says:  Then I googled “least popular” flavor and pistachio came up – and poor Mustachio Pistachio was born!  A lot of pistachio flavor lovers have taken offense to this characterization, but there it was in black and white, and the rest of the idea took off!

Dave lives in Nashville and Cheryl lives in New Jersey.  Tell us more about how you make your writing process work. Dave says:  Before the pandemic hit, Cheryl came out to Nashville every few weeks.  We had a little studio with a whole puppet set that I built with my son, and we’d spend hours a day laughing, creating dialog and songs, and videotaping for a little show we created called The Waterhole Bunch (now on Roku TV!).  Being in that environment was incredibly inspiring.  After the pandemic hit, Cheryl stopped traveling as much, but because we’d established such a good base, we could easily create over FaceTime. I miss those days and the old school puppet set though.  It was really fun but also back breaking, contorting of our bodies into pretzels while manipulating the hand puppets. Cheryl says:  Dave’s humor and songwriting ability just plain inspire me.  Every now and then, I’ll doubt myself and think, “this is too crazy.”  I’ll stop writing for a day, and then wake up in the middle of the night with new ideas. I’ll mention one to Dave and he’ll say something in that Frank TL Frogg voice, and I’ll say “that’s brilliant,” and the feeding frenzy is on again.   Then when I look back at what we’ve created I can’t even remember how we got there.  One thing I know for sure though is when it comes to writing, I can’t “not” do it.  And that’s just a fact I’ve now accepted.

You’ve said that you see Frank TL Frogg and Friends as a children’s “educational entertainment platform.”  What do you mean by that and what do you see ahead for Frank TL Frogg and the puppets? Dave says:  While we love the entertainment side of the project, we’re finding ourselves focusing more and more on the educational side.  A while back, I worked a few years as a schoolteacher.  I’d say where books meet music meets education, just across the street from Puppet Plaza, is the sweet corner where we create for parents and children! Cheryl says: That’s a sweet corner indeed.  We’re currently working with teachers to guide us more in this direction.  Definitely stay tuned because our upcoming projects are just as much fun if not more of an absolute blast.  And thank you to all the families who love the hardcover book and Digital Flipbook; your reviews mean the absolute world to us! Both say:  Yes, thank you so much everyone.  See you all in the puppet-sized town of Lucky Fork!  But remember you have to get “puppetsized” to get in...LOL...that’s a whole other story!
