What’s Not Said is a story about Kassie O’Callaghan, a middle-aged woman on a mission to divorce her emotionally abusive husband and start a new life with a younger man she met while on a solo vacation in Venice. When she learns her husband has chronic kidney disease, her plans collapse until she pokes around his pajama drawer and discovers his illness is the least of his deceits.

Then again, Kassie is no angel. The separate lives they lead collide head-on into a tangled web of sex, lies, and DNA. As she helps her husband find an organ donor, Kassie uncovers a secret, forcing her to decide whose life to save: her husband’s or her own.

Sense-ible Benefits to Being an Author

By Valerie Taylor

Author of What’s Not Said (She Writes Press, 2020) and What’s Not True (She Writes Press, August 2021)

Everyone has a unique innate talent. Since I can’t sing, dance, or even grow a potted plant, I guess mine is writing. Since childhood, I’ve been mesmerized by the written word; and just like Thomas Jefferson, I can’t imagine living without books surrounding me.

That it took six decades for me to write my first novel and then to follow it with a sequel amazes me when I hold both books in my hands. What was I waiting for?

Since publishing What’s Not Said in the fall of 2020 during the pandemic, I have learned that I actually traded the financial services marketing career I retired from to a 24/7 author marketing career that has no retirement plan in sight!

While being a published author can be exhausting, especially when trying to balance the inner drive to write the next best seller with the demands of promoting the current titles, there are a number of benefits I could have never imagined during my years in corporate America.

Let me tap into our five senses to describe what I mean.

There is nothing better than holding in your hands the book it took years to create. Touching the front and back covers, as if they were cashmere; rubbing your fingers across the dedication in the front and the acknowledgments page in the back, all the while fearing the moisture from your fingers might smudge the ink.

And the paper and ink of an off-the-press book has a distinct smell that you love like you love the scent of a newborn baby.

Moreover, it’s mind boggling seeing your name sprawled across the cover, on the spine, inside the book, online, on your website, in guest blogs, on the shelf of your local library or bookstore. Your fifteen minutes of fame expands for some infinite amount of time because books don’t have an expiration date! (I know my novels will still be around even when I’m not!)

Attending book club discussion groups, in-person or on Zoom, lets you hear the good, the bad, and the ugly impressions of real honest-to-goodness readers, not just the biased opinions of your relatives and friends. And through that feedback, you become better at your craft, if you accept it honestly.

Finally, no matter how many or how few books you sell, being a published author gives you a taste of satisfaction. Using your own unique talent, you’ve achieved some level of success that motivates you to sit your rear back in the chair and do it all over again—whether or not it makes any sense to you or anyone else.

You are an author. Soak in all the five senses to your heart’s content.

After two heartbreaking losses, Luna wants adventure. Something and somewhere very different from the affluent, sheltered home in California and Hawaii where she grew up. An adventure in which she can also make some difference.

Lucien, a worldly, well-traveled young architect, finds a stranger's journal at a café. Though he has qualms and pangs of guilt about reading it, they don't stop him. His decision changes his life forever.

Months later, they meet at a bookstore. Fascinated by his stories and adventurous spirit, Luna goes on a Peace Corps stint to a rural rice-growing village in Cambodia. There, she finds a world steeped in ancient culture and the lasting ravages of a deadly history. Will she leave this world unscathed?

An epistolary tale of courage, resilience, and the bonds that bring diverse people together.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

First of all, I love the cover of this book. It's bright vibrant colors would make me pick this book before other. The Shade Under the Mango Tree is a different read than other books I have read, but it was intriguing and interesting. The story was about Luna and Lucien and we get to know them and their life and feelings through the Moleskine journal. I enjoyed getting to know these two characters and the others we meet throughout the story. The author does a fantastic job describing the details in such a way they seem so real. I love the vivid descriptions of the different cultures.

My favorite was Hawaii and Luna visiting her grandmother in the house she grew up in. I love grandma and her sweet personality and wise wisdom. There is so much going on in this book. A lots of twists and turns keeling the story entertaining. I was intrigued to see how the author would weave everything in this story together and come up with an ending that wasn't really expected. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy multi cultural stories, stories featuring journal entries, this is one you will enjoy. This one is four stars for me.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Dr. Hope A. Walter, EdD writes the cutest story about her English  Bulldog Punk and her life's journey. Punk had a rough time in her early life. She was neglected by her first family, they were good to Punk at first and then she became too much trouble for them. When a rescue person found punk she began a new life, first at the dog rescue and then she was adopted my another family who loves her. But it wasn't easy to trust again. To trust that this new family would really take care of her. It too her a while to trust again as well as heal from what she had been through.

I love this book about Punk. Walter does a fabulous job of letting Punk tell her own story so children will listen and learn how to deal with neglect. Children will love the adorable Punk and will want to listen to this story and hear the valuable lessons she is telling them. The author does a great job of detailing everything her dog went through to heal, trust and belong to his new family.

This book wouldn't be complete without the adorable illustrations by Susi B. Davis. Punk is adorable, and the watercolors on each page bring the story to life. I can see children wanting to read this book over and over again. Triumphant Tails of Rescue Dogs: Punk's Plight is not only good for libraries and School rooms, it is also a great book for counselors, social workers and any others that would with children who suffer from neglect. I highly recommend The Triumphant Tails of Rescue Dogs: Punk's Plight by Dr. Hope A. Walter, EdD to everyone. It is such a sweet read. This book is Five Stars for me.

Hope A. Walter, Ed. D grew up in East Greenville, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Upper Perkiomen High School, Hope received her B.S. in Elementary Education at Kutztown University in 1996, her M.S. in Educational Psychology in 2002 from the University of Las Vegas in Nevada, and her Ed.D in Educational Leadership in 2018. Currently, Hope resides in McMinnville, Oregon with her husband of 25 years, her 3 boys, and her 2 dogs and 2 cats. She works as an adjunct professor at Linfield University and Oregon State University teaching mathematics education and educational psychology to future teachers.

Punk’s Plight was conceptualized after teaching future teachers about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Hope saw the connection between ACES and the journey of her own bulldog, Pumpkin, who was neglected, rescued, and spent the rest of her life learning how to trust and love again. Sadly, Pumpkin passed away peacefully in November 2020 after a long life with the Walter family. Hope wants Punk’s story to help children suffering from neglect by showing children they can recover, heal, and prosper despite experiencing neglect.

And now an interesting interview with author Vicki Lau

Do you have another profession besides writing and visual effects?

I tend to get involved in a lot of industries so I am what you would call a multi-hyphenate artist (if there is such a profession). In general, I do a lot of things aside from just writing and VFX – it would be hard to pin me down with just one label.

However, if you try asking Google “what does Vicki Lau do” you’ll get a shortlist of answers – all of which are accurate except for ‘visual artist’ maybe (been trying to get that changed for years). But in all seriousness, I also teach VFX and filmmaking online (with my reach currently being over 80,000 students all over the world) and would consider myself an educator/content creator in that sense. That being said, I do give talks and speeches (some of them paid) so, in that sense, that does make me a speaker (though I wouldn’t go as far as to say speaking is my profession – unless you count teaching).

Where do you write?

In my bedroom – where I also eat, sleep, think, and exercise. Yea, I know. #hermitLife

What was your favorite part, and your least favorite part, of the publishing journey?

Most favorite part: working with other talents to bring the book title to life.

Least favorite: waiting on platforms to publish and/or approve the book title for distribution. Especially audiobooks – man, those platforms could take forever sometimes.

Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?

The book is really about understanding oneself, one’s industry and, ultimately, determining what I would call your “ambition appetite.” In this book, you’ll read about how I came from a foreign country with zero connections to Hollywood and ultimately got to where I am today. The ambition appetite is present in all of us at varying degrees and it relies heavily on honest self-assessment of one’s position in life and determining how satisfied you are with your current position in life in contrast to the goals you have set for yourself.

Now, I don’t want to mislead anyone and say that this book is all about the ambition appetite – it isn’t – but it will lead readers to that point where, given all the data, observations, and insights I’ve made about the industry, it comes time to determine whether or not the reader is satisfied with themselves at the end of the road. 0

Does your industry offer the capacity to fill your ambition appetite? What exactly is your level of ambition?

Ambition is such a forgotten value and trait today that I believe this book will eventually culminate in readers taking a hard look at themselves and their industries to see for themselves if they are actually living up to (or exceeding) their potential. Whether or not you are in VFX or in a creative industry, it is the journey that counts – and I invite all of you to experience that journey in Why I Do VFX.

Name a quirky thing you like to do.

I like dancing intensely to myself in my room. I will break a sweat doing so, even with the air-conditioning turned on at full blast. Dancing is very invigorating.

Did you always wanted to be a VFX artist growing up?

Actually, no. I think that me wanting to do VFX evolved naturally from my passion for video-editing (having discovered it at the age of 14). When I was younger (like 10 or so, let’s say), I probably didn’t even know what VFX was; plus, it wasn’t like Singapore was an advocate of a career in the arts back then (hence, I wasn’t even aware of career paths like VFX or the like). I would say, however, that I did non-seriously consider becoming a detective or even a singer/voice actor as a child (you know, like how some kids want to be astronauts or firemen – they weren’t serious about it at that age).

In the book, I mentioned that my reason for doing VFX was because it became a channel for self-expression, so in that sense, VFX discovered me before I discovered it. Being a VFX artist is a very enjoyable journey (with its pros and cons) but there is definitely more to life than just being labelled or pigeonholed in one little niche.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Great Weight Debate: Get the Facts and Choose the Diet That's Right for You by Amy Newman Shapiro. What an interesting book, especially for people who have tried diet after diet and have failed. This is not a fad diet book. But in this book, author Amy Newman Shapiro does list all of the many diets and summarizes each one in a way that readers can understand and know. A lot of the diets I have never heard of, but there are many I have heard of, and I have tried a few of them. But what readers will learn is that just as everyone is different, every diet is different. And hopefully after reading this book you will have a better idea of which diet is the best for you to choose. In addition to diets, Amy talks about different foods and why they are or may not be the best choices for you.

All in all, this is one of the best books on dieting I have ever read, and I have read a lot. I learned many interesting things about some of the diets that have been floating around for years. This book is a great resource and I will definitely be keeping my copy for those times I need answers.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Now join me in this wonderful interview with the author

  • If losing weight when you are overweight or obese is healthy, what makes a diet unhealthy?

Most diets are a set of rules telling you what to eat and what not to eat. Any food group that is restricted or eliminated can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Over time some nutrient deficiencies can lead to fatigue, osteoporosis, and intestinal issues. Other diets encourage high fat intake and that can lead to heart and liver disease.

Extreme diets, those that cause drastic weight loss over a relatively short amount of time, rarely lead to permanent weight loss. Remember the TV show The Biggest Loser? They all struggled and lost the battle to keep the weight off. Part of that is because the changes in metabolism (the rate at which we burn calories) drastically reduce calorie needs meaning you have to eat much less to maintain the weight loss. In other words, after dieting, we don’t burn as many calories as we did before dieting. Any calories we consume but don’t burn, turn to fat. And on top of that, as we regain the weight, out metabolism does not increase, it stays at its after- diet low, the slower metabolism causing the pounds to pile on that much easier and taking them off again that much more difficult, maybe impossible.

The weight loss goal should include realistic expectations of target weight loss and a strategy in place for keeping the weight off.

  • If I haven’t been exercising, how can I burn extra calories?

Walking is the most basic, least expensive, do anywhere, form of exercise there is.  Walking can be done on a school track, indoors on a treadmill, down Main Street, a country road, or around the soccer field while your kid is at practice.  You can walk with your friends, your kids, your coworkers and your dog. Or walk solo, enjoying some alone time, good music or a podcast. You are more likely to stick with it if it fits into your lifestyle, schedule it and enjoy it.  It does not matter what time of day or where you walk.  Walking burns calories, tones muscles, increases cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and helps keep blood sugar under control.

  • What is the biggest obstacle to losing weight?

Portion control. It is not necessarily what you eat but how much that makes a difference. The amount of food we put on our plate is a habit, a behavior we do without thought. But stop and consider how hungry you are in that moment, and you may find you can be satisfied with less. Another challenge to portion control is the amount we are served in to-go orders and prepared food containers. We are all on a see-food diet. When we see food, we want to eat food, hungry or not. The best strategy for changing this behavior is to stop and consider your hunger level before each eating event, put less food than usual in front of you, and after you have eaten, reassess how satisfied you feel.

  • Where is your favorite travel destination?

I have had the great fortune to have had the opportunity to travel around the globe with friends and family. We travel in celebration of big events in place of throwing parties. Those celebrations have brought me to Greece, Belize, Tahiti, Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and Central America. But the most memorable is a nine-day sail through the British Virgin Islands aboard a yacht with a captain and cook, my husband and friends. Every day was the perfect mix of swimming and snorkeling, exploring the nearest island, curling up with a good book and dancing on deck under the stars.

  • Do you have another profession besides writing?

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I provide nutrition counseling and lifestyle management in a private practice as well as being a corporate wellness consultant. And I recently completed yoga teacher training and hope to be leading more yoga classes in the near future.

  • Where do you write?

I keep my laptop on a desk wide enough to spread out research materials and notes facing my garden with a bird feeder within view that attracts colorful birds to keep me company.

Thank you Amy Newman Shapiro for answering these questions for us, and help us better understand what your book is teaching us. I know I am going to use this with the diet I am already on.
