“M.J.
Evans does an excellent job of winding the era's history and the
lesser-known job of the Sand Pounders into a realistic story of a mature
teen's determination to make a difference in her world.” - Diane Donovan for Midwest Book Review
“A gripping YA historical novel packed full of twists, turns and memorable characters. Highly recommended!” - The Wishing Shelf Book Review (UK)
Book Description:
Fearing an invasion by German and Japanese forces during World War II, the U.S. Coast Guard enlisted horsemen to patrol the beaches along the east and west coasts. The unit was called "The Sand Pounders" and they rode their horses up and down the beaches from 1942 to 1944.
In Tillamook, Oregon, a young equestrian decided to join them. There was only one
problem...they were only accepting men. That didn't slow her down.
"The Sand Pounder" is a Young Adult historical fiction set during World War II.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
The Sand Pounder - Love and Drama on Horseback in WWII by M. J. Evans is a different take on WWII stories I am use to reading. I have to admit, I didn't know what a Sand Pounder did before I read this book. I appreciate the attention to detail Evans shows readers in this book. I found myself learning several new things as I read this book. I enjoyed the carefully crafted characters and their development throughout the plot. John, aka Jane was fabulous! She played her part in the story so very well, and didn't mind having to dwell with the other men. She was more concerned about doing the job she came to do. Will she be found out? Well, this is a reason you need to read this book. You will love the easy reading of author M. J. Evans as she tells this story through the eye of young Jane. If you want a good clean read or know a young person that loves to read, this would be a wonderful choice. And those of you who are WWII bugging, you will enjoy this different take on the war. I encourage you to pick up your copy today.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Why I Love to Write!
I am so honored to be asked to write a post for “Splashes of Joy.” The title of this blog fits my book, “The Sand Pounder – Love and Drama on Horseback in WWII,” perfectly. Jane, the protagonist in this historical fiction expresses how much joy galloping down the beach on the back of her horse brings to her. I could change that to “M.J. Evans finds joy splashing through the waves while galloping down the beach on the back of her horse!”
Writing is the older sister of reading for me. The joy I received getting lost is a book is the same joy multiplied several times by writing. When writing fantasy, I get to let my imagination go wild. When writing historical fiction, I get to add twists and turns to the factual information I dig up doing research. All of it is a very creative and satisfying experience.
As a mother of five fabulous children, (one girl and four boys,) I never allowed them to say: “I’m bored.” I responded by reminding them that smart people never get bored. I told them, “We Evans’ can always use our imagination to create an adventure in our heads.”
Writing is like that. As an author, I create an adventure in my head. Then I spend hours and hours writing it down to share with the world. Creating beautiful prose is part of the artistry involved. I always say: “I am an artist with words.”
Writing takes practice so don’t expect to get it perfect the first time. I can’t tell you how many revisions I make on each book. But don’t give up. You’ll get there and your masterpiece will be something you can be proud of!
I hope you enjoy reading “The Sand Pounder – Love and Drama on Horseback in WWII.” Please post a review on Amazon and Goodreads and tell your friends about it!
